Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a network protocol that enables transport of Internet Protocol (IP) packets over Ethernet links. It is designed to transport IP packets across connections in a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) session. PPPoE is the commonly used protocol in DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) connections, allowing users to access their broadband connection with a username and password. The source of the PPPoE protocol is usually the internet service provider (ISP). The ISP bundles the PPPoE protocol with a broadband connection and configures it according to the user’s preferences. It is then used to transfer data between the user’s computer and the ISP’s network. This allows the user to access the internet by using their username and password and establishes a PPPoE session between their computer and the ISP’s network. In addition to providing access to the internet, PPPoE also provides an authentication and authorization mechanism for the internet connection. This process is known as "PPP Authentication". Once the PPPoE session is successfully established and the user is authenticated, a connection is established between the user’s computer and the network. PPPoE also helps the ISP to limit and manage the internet usage of each user. PPPoE can also be used in other types of network configurations, such as peer-to-peer networking, to provide network authentication and control the access of the users to certain resources in the network. This is possible because PPPoE provides the credentials required for authentication and authorization.
