Poppenkast Courses
Poppenkast is a traditional Dutch puppet show which translates as “puppet theater”. It is believed to have originated in the 17th century, and is still performed today. The show is performed by a single artist who moves a large group of puppets in front of a large cloth or canvas. The puppeteer uses both hands to move the puppets and provide the voices of the characters, often in an exaggerated, humorous manner. The traditional repertoire of Poppenkast shows involve stories about everyday life and relationships. Stories about family, jobs, getting in trouble, and finding true love are common themes. The stories are usually light-hearted and full of comic relief. Poppenkast shows also often involve musical numbers, with the puppeteer playing a musical instrument such as a flute, guitar, or accordion. The puppets used in Poppenkast shows can be either hand puppets or rod puppets. Hand puppets are made of wood or fabric, have jointed arms and legs, and are operated with one hand. Rod puppets are larger, have articulated body parts, and are operated by one or more hand rods. Poppenkast shows are great fun for all ages. They provide entertainment, teach basic values, and bring families together. Historically, they were often performed at festivals, fairs, schools, and other special occasions. Today, they continue to be enjoyed in the Netherlands and abroad.
