Polynomial Curves Examples Courses
Polynomial curves are mathematical functions that graph as smooth curved lines. They are an important tool for areas of mathematics such as algebra, geometry, computing and more. Polynomials are also used to describe physical phenomena such as circles, ellipses, exponentials and more. Examples of polynomial curves include: Parabola: A parabola is a U-shaped curve described by the equation y = ax^2 + bx + c. It is used to model relationships between two variables, such as the distance traveled over time by an object in free fall. Circle: A circle is a symmetric curve described by the equation x^2 + y^2 = r^2, where r is the radius of the circle. The equation predicts the circumference of the circle and it is used in many real-world situations. Ellipse: An ellipse is a closed curve with two distinct foci and two axes, one longer than the other. The equation describing an ellipse is x^2/a^2 + y^2/b^2 = 1, where a and b are the lengths of the two axes. Ellipses are used to model orbits of planets, moons and other bodies in the solar system. Hyperbole: A hyperbola is a shape which has two arms that open in opposite directions. Its equation is of the form y = 1/ax^2 + bx + c. Hyperbolas are used to model motion in space, such as the gravitational forces between two objects. Exponential: An exponential curve is described by the equation y = a^x, where a is a constant. Its graph follows the shape of an exponential growth curve, which is used in many areas including population growth and radioactive decay.
