Pollutants Sources Courses
Pollutants are the result of certain activities or products that generate harmful byproducts which can have a catastrophic effect on our health, ecosystems, and even our economy. Sources of pollutants can include factories, cars and trucks burning gasoline or diesel, and agricultural activities such as fertilizing and pesticide use. Industry and manufacturing often produce pollutants through the burning of fossil fuels for energy and production. These emissions cause air pollution by releasing carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), sulfur dioxide (SO2), lead, and volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the atmosphere. Burning of plastics, rubber, and other synthetic materials can also release hazardous substances like mercury, chromium, and cadmium into the environment. Transportation, including automobiles, buses, planes, and trains, produce emissions through burning fossil fuels for energy. Air pollution produced by these sources includes particulate matter, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. Agricultural activities such as fertilizer use, pesticide use, and soil cultivation can also pollute. Ammonia and nitrates released from these activities can make their way into surface and ground water, leading to adverse health effects for humans, animals, and plants alike. Pollutants from wastewater and sewage systems can add to the water pollution we are already seeing. Sewage is comprised of human waste and contains a plethora of pollutants and pathogens, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, viruses, and bacteria. Indoor air pollution is another source of pollutants that can cause varied health effects. Examples of common indoor pollutants include radon, carbon monoxide, asbestos, dust, mold, and second-hand cigarette smoke. The above sources of pollutants pose a significant threat to the environment, but we can combat them. Through reducing energy use, lessening dependence on fossil fuels, increasing our use of renewable energy, limiting agricultural activities and pesticide use, and reducing our reliance on plastics, we can take steps towards curbing the spread of pollutants.
