Pollinating Courgettes Courses

Pollinating courgettes (or zucchini) at home can seem like a daunting task, especially if you're a beginner gardener. It’s actually fairly simple and a great way to make sure that you get a successful yield. Plus, it’s fun! You’ll need a small, soft-haired paintbrush or Q-tip to do the work. Select the best looking male flowers – ones that look strong and have fully opened petals. The male flowers will have a thin stem and pollen can be seen in the center. Gently remove one of these male flowers, taking care to brush against the flowers as you go – try to get some of the pollen onto the brush or Q-tip. Next, move on to the female courgette flowers. Remove them from the stem and with your brush or Q-tip, brush the centre of the flower. You’ll know the pollination was successful if the female flowers produce a small fruit on the end of the stem within a few days. You don’t need to do this for every single courgette flower. In fact, too much pollinating can cause more flowers to open, but fewer fruit to form. Technique and timing are key. If you’re careful, generous with the pollen and take your time, pollinating courgettes will become a breeze. As soon as you have mastered this technique, you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour all season long. Enjoy!
