Ross Poldark is the titular protagonist of the eponymous historical fiction television series based on the novel series of the same name. He is a distant cousin of George Warleggan, the well-to-do banker from nearby Truro. Through a family connection, Ross is an inheritance beneficiary of the Poldarks, his relatives from Cornwall. George Warleggan is the cousin of Ross Poldark and the younger brother of Elizabeth Warleggan. George is an ambitious and ruthless banker from nearby Truro, who is Ross's rival throughout the series. He is competitive and desperate to marry Elisabeth and become part of the higher circles of society. Initially, George is a foil to Ross as a less popular, less romantic aristocrat. However, they eventually become close and George reveals his compassion and understanding of Ross's goals. Demelza Poldark is Ross's cousin and eventually his wife. She is a strong-willed young woman who grew up in the mining village of Nampara. After Ross rescues her from a life of poverty, she develops into a confident and independent woman of the Poldarks. She is loyal to Ross, despite their constant struggles, and eventually becomes a real partner to him. Verity Poldark is Ross's cousin, the sister of his late father Sir Charles. She is a nurturing figure in the Poldark family, always looking out for others' well-being. Verity is an independent woman and she stands her ground when a convenient marriage is proposed by George Warleggan. Verity eventually marries the heir of the Trenwith Estate and becomes the mother of her own family. Francis Poldark is Ross's cousin and is the brother of their late father, Charles. Francis is initially a mediocre plantation owner who is struggling to make ends meet. During his journey to India, he finds success and wealth as a merchant and brings it back to Cornwall as he shops to revive the family business. He eventually finds love and success as a businessman, and we see him achieve an equitable balance between the Poldark and Warleggan interests in the series.
