The "Pogba Curse" is an infamous phenomenon surrounding Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba. The curse supposedly began when the French international joined the Old Trafford club from Juventus in 2016. Since then, it appears as if any manager that has coached Pogba has been ‘cursed’ with bad results and, in some cases, axed. The Portuguese manager José Mourinho, who signed Pogba, was the first victim of the curse and was famously sacked two and a half years after his arrival. The curse made a comeback in 2019 when United hired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s interim manager after Mourinho’s departure. Things looked rosy at first, but then United lost 11 straight games and doubts surrounding Pogba’s presence in the team began to surface. Solskjaer was then made permanent manager, but the club’s poor form and results seemed to follow him. It can’t be stated definitively that the “Pogba Curse” is real, but it is hard to deny that something strange is happening and that Pogba’s presence might have an influence. Now, United are looking for another new manager, but it remains to be seen if the next coach will suffer the same fate and find themselves in the grip of the “Pogba Curse”.
