Plotting Course To Steer
Plotting a course to steer is the process of plotting a course to successfully navigate an area using landmarks, compass headings, straight lines, and GPS coordinates. A course plotter is an instrument used to plot a course, usually consisting of a plotting board and compasses, along with pencils and rulers to mark the course. This method of navigation has been used for centuries, among sailors, pilots and navigators. The plotting process begins with the pilot or navigator gathering information such as landmarks, compass headings, and wind speed and direction. Once the navigator or pilot has collected this information they will draw a line connecting the landmarks to form a course. They may then use a ruler to measure the length of the line and double-check the measurements. The next step is for the navigator or pilot to adjust the course to account for various factors such as current, wind and other navigational hazards that may exist. They may also adjust the course for factors such as fuel efficiency or to take advantage of the wind and current. Finally, the navigator or pilot will draw the course on a plotting board and transfer the course to a navigational chart for easy navigation. Plotting a course to steer is a skill that takes practice, but with skill and experience, a pilot or navigator can become familiar with the process and be able to quickly and accurately plot a course to steer.
