Plica are pockets of tissue that form inside the knee joint. When they become irritated and inflamed, they can cause a condition known as plica syndrome. The exact cause of plica syndrome is not known, but there are several potential contributing factors. One possible cause of plica syndrome is overuse, particularly in activities that involve repetitive and strenuous movements of the knee, such as running and jumping. This type of activity puts extra strain on the knee, which can lead to the formation of plica. Another possible cause of plica syndrome is a direct injury to the knee. Even a minor blow to the knee can lead to plica, if it disrupts the alignment of the bones, ligaments, and tendons inside the knee. It’s also possible that genetics are a factor in plica syndrome. Certain genetic conditions, such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, can leave the knee vulnerable to plica. Finally, underlying illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can also contribute to the development of plica. The inflammation caused by the illness can irritate the plica and lead to plica syndrome.
