Pleurisy Causes Courses
Pleurisy is the inflammation of the thin tissue (pleura) that lines the inner side of the chest cavity and covers the lungs. It is usually caused by viral or bacterial infections, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, and other diseases. In some cases, pleurisy is caused by autoimmune disorders such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, or is a side effect of medications such as cancer treatments. It can also be caused by complications of injury or surgery in the area, including chest surgery. Less commonly, pleurisy can be caused by certain types of cancers, including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. In some cases, the cause of pleurisy cannot be determined. This is referred to as "idiopathic pleurisy". It is important to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of pleurisy, including chest pain, difficulty breathing, or a dry cough. Your doctor will perform a physical exam and may order blood tests, imaging tests, or a chest X-ray to help determine the cause. Treatment for pleurisy depends on the cause and may include antibiotics, pain relievers, and other medications to reduce inflammation.
