Pimlico Race Course
Pimlico Race Course is the second oldest track in the United States and has been the home of the second jewel in the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, the Preakness Stakes, since 1873. Located on the grounds of the old Pimlico Race Track, the race course is located in Baltimore, Maryland and is owned by the Maryland Jockey Club. As a Thoroughbred racetrack, it is world-renowned for its annual Preakness Stakes event and the Maryland Breeders Cup. In addition to the Preakness and Breeders Cups, the race course offers an array of other races throughout the year, including The Dixie, the Maryland Million, the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, the Miss Preakness Stakes, and the Baltimore-Washington International Turf Festival. The track also hosts a variety of special events and concerts throughout the year. Originally, the Pimlico Race Course ran five days a week, from Wednesday through Sunday. However, due to financial issues and the mass appeal of off-track betting, the event was moved in the mid-seventies to Saturdays and Sundays only. In the mid-eighties, live harness racing was reintroduced after not running for five years and is held on Friday nights. Today, the Old Clubhouse, built in 1894, stands as a testament to the historical significance of the track and the surrounding area. Situated on a hilltop overlooking the racetrack, the structure is recognized as one of the finest examples of 19th-century architecture in Maryland. The site also houses the Preakness Museum and the Maryland Racing Hall of Fame, both of which honor the long and rich history of racing in Maryland and the contributions of legendary jockeys, trainers, and owners to the sport.
