Phytoestrogens Sources Courses
Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring compounds found in plants that are similar to the hormone estrogen in humans. They are found in a variety of foods and supplements, offering potential health benefits related to estrogen in the body. Common sources of phytoestrogens include soybeans and soy-based products, grains, legumes, and most fruits and vegetables. Soybeans and soy-based products are perhaps the most well-known sources of phytoestrogens. Soybeans contain the isoflavone compounds genistein and daidzein, which are considered the most important dietary sources of phytoestrogens. Examples of soy-based products include tempeh, miso, and tofu. Grains, particularly whole grains, are another common source of phytoestrogens. Wheat, barley, rye, and oats all contain phytoestrogenic compounds, including lignans. Grains can be consumed in the form of bread, cereal, and other food products. Legumes are another source of phytoestrogens that are often overlooked. Common "pulse crops" such as peas, beans, chickpeas, and lentils all contain phytoestrogens that can be consumed in the form of soups, stews, and salads. Most fruits and vegetables also contain phytoestrogens, although the amounts vary depending on the type of fruit or vegetable. For instance, apples, pears, and strawberries are known to contain lignans, while tomatoes, blueberries, and cranberries contain isoflavones. Phytoestrogens can also be found in some processed foods such as beer, black olives, peanut butter, and chocolate. Supplements such as red clover extract, flaxseed oil, and dong quai root can also be taken to increase dietary intake of phytoestrogens. Although there is disagreement in the scientific community over the potential health benefits of phytoestrogens, they are generally believed to be beneficial to human health. For this reason, they can be taken as dietary supplements in order to increase dietary intake of these compounds.
