Phosphorus Sources Food Courses

Phosphorus is an essential mineral that plays an important role in energy metabolism, muscle contraction, kidney function, and cell formation. In order to maintain healthy levels of phosphorus in the body, it is essential to consume enough dietary sources of phosphorus. Organ meats such as liver, kidney, and heart are excellent sources of phosphorus. Additionally, many types of seafood such as salmon, sardines, trout, and tuna also provide good sources of phosphorus. Nuts, seeds, and legumes are also excellent sources of phosphorus, with almonds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds being especially rich in this mineral. Whole grains such as oats, quinoa, and brown rice also provide good sources of phosphorus. Dairy products such as cheese, milk, and yogurt are also great sources of phosphorus, especially when they are fortified with vitamin D. Fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, artichokes, bananas, dates, and potatoes also provide good amounts of phosphorus. If you are looking for a plant-based source of phosphorus, peanut butter is an excellent source. Finally, many fortified breakfast cereals are also rich in phosphorus, although caution should be used when selecting some of these cereals as they may be high in sugar. It is important to note that although grains and legumes provide good sources of phosphorus, they are also relatively low in bioavailability meaning that the mineral may not be as easily absorbed by the body from these sources as from animal products.
