Phonology Classes Courses

Phonology classes provide students with a foundational knowledge of the core elements of language study and help them better understand how grammar and pronunciation affect communication. The coursework focuses on the study of the sound systems of languages, including the analysis of speech sounds, syllabic structures, and phonotactics. In a phonology class, students learn about the International Phonetic Alphabet and then apply that knowledge to their own language. They also analyze commonly used sound patterns and their various functions, as well as the sounds and patterns found in different dialects. Students also explore the influence of sociolinguistics, or the study of the relationship between language and culture. This helps them understand why and how languages change over time and recognize their similarities and differences. At the end of their phonology classes, students should have a better knowledge of the intricacies of language and how speech is formed. They should also be able to discern between different dialects and identify their own speaking flaws.
