Phaon Crescent Caterpillar Courses

The Phaon Crescent caterpillar is a species of seasonal moth found along the American west coast. Its bright orange and yellow colors make it a stunning sight and it is found frequently among wildflowers, trees, and gardens. Unlike other caterpillars, the Phaon Crescent's colors are more of a crescent shape than a banded pattern. The caterpillar is typically found in the spring and summer months, feeding on the leaves of wildflowers, as well as aspen, poplar and sagebrush. The adults are day-flying moths that emerge in the daytime, often seen fluttering around in search of nectar from flowers. The caterpillar has an interesting life cycle, as it hibernates in the winter months to avoid the cold. Since most types of caterpillars die off in the winter, the Phaon Crescent is able to survive in this way. The Phaon Crescent caterpillar is of particular interest to those studying the ecology and evolution of moths and butterflies. This species has the unique ability to alter the color of its wings and body to match the environment in which it is found, making it an important study in the fields of behavioral and evolutionary biology. Because they are so intriguing to watch, the Phaon Crescent caterpillar is a great addition to any garden. Watching the caterpillar feed and flutter its way among the wildflowers makes a great sight– and the caterpillars often have a great view of their surroundings!
