Period Causes Courses
Periods, also known as menstruation, are normal, physiological processes occurring in healthy, reproductive aged women. Despite this, they can be quite difficult, both physically and mentally. Periods can be accompanied by a multitude of symptoms including but not limited to, fatigue, abdominal cramps, bloating, breast tenderness, and headaches. There are many causes for period problems, including hormonal imbalance and medical conditions. Hormones play an essential role in regulating a woman’s menstrual cycle. When levels of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone fluctuate or are imbalanced, this can lead to irregular periods or cause issues such as menstrual cramps, acne, and other problems. Hormonal Imbalances The most common causes of hormonal imbalances involve ovulation, pregnancy, and menopause. During ovulation, levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate in order to prepare the uterus for implantation. During pregnancy, hormones drastically change in order to help the body carry and maintain a baby, and during menopause, a woman’s body stops ovulating which causes a decrease in estrogen and progesterone production. In some cases, hormonal imbalances can also be caused by various medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, some types of cancer, and pelvic inflammatory disease. Lifestyle Habits The lifestyle habits of a woman can also play a big role in the quality of her period and whether or not she has problems with it. Stress, poor diet, and lack of exercise are all factors that can affect a woman’s hormones and lead to irregular periods, cramps, and other issues. In addition to this, certain medications such as birth control pills, antidepressants, and anti-anxiety medication can also disrupt the menstrual cycle and cause various period problems. Periods are an essential part of a woman’s life and it is important to understand the various causes of period problems in order to properly address them. If any of the above mentioned causes are suspected, it is best to speak with a doctor to find out how to best manage your menstrual cycle and overall health.
