Perimastitis Courses
Perimastitis is a type of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) that mainly affects the peripheral areas of the breast. It is also known as inflammatory carcinoma or inflammatory edema. It is an aggressive form of breast cancer, and it is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer in women. The cause of perimastitis is still unknown; however, it is thought to be related to a combination of environmental and genetic factors. It is generally believed that the tumor has an underlying inflammatory component, which can cause swelling, warmth, and redness of the breast. Uncontrolled inflammation can sometimes be the trigger for development of malignant breast cancer cells. This malignancy of the breast has varied lengths of latency, and can develop over a period of days, weeks, months or even years. As the tumor progresses, it can spread to other parts of the body and become life-threatening. The diagnosis of perimastitis is typically made by biopsy, where a sample of tissue is taken from the affected area and examined microscopically. Depending on the results, doctors may then do imaging tests like mammograms, MRIs, and ultrasounds to stage the cancer and determine appropriate treatment. Surgery is usually the first-line treatment for this type of cancer, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. In some cases, drugs such as trastuzumab (Herceptin) and tamoxifen can be used to reduce the chance of recurrence. Recovery from perimastitis is generally good, and the prognosis is favorable if the cancer is detected early, it is not too advanced, and treatment is successful. In general, women with early-stage perimastitis have a better chance of recovery than those with later stages.
