Pericallosal Artery Courses

The pericallosal artery is a large artery that runs along the Mid-Sagittal plane of the brain. It is derived from the internal carotid artery and can be divided into two branches. The first branch, the anterior pericallosal artery, supplies branches to the frontal, parietal and temporal regions of the cerebral cortex, as well as to the corpus callosum. The second branch, the posterior pericallosal artery, supplies a branch to the midbrain and anastomoses with the posterior cerebral artery. The pericallosal artery is typically widely patent and provides an excellent collateral after large vessel occlusions such as middle cerebral artery occlusions and large anterior communicating artery aneurysms. Because of its close anatomical relationship with the white matter and other subcortical structures, it is important to keep this artery patent during revascularization procedures. The pericallosal artery is an important regional artery with a large area of supply, which can be a key to the treatment of cerebrovascular lesions in certain cases. Therefore, it is important for radiologists and vascular neurosurgeons to understand its anatomy and its role in the pathology of cerebrovascular disorders.
