Perfectionism Causes Stress Courses
Perfectionism can cause both mental and physical stress. Perfectionism is an unrealistic expectation that one must be or do something perfectly or exactly right in order to succeed, or to be a good person. It is usually associated with the thought that if one does not succeed or perform perfectly, then one is a failure. When perfectionism is present, the pressure to succeed can become overwhelming which can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression. Fear of failure can further intensify the stress by not taking risks and creating avoidance behavior that prevents progression and success. Perfectionism can also lead to procrastination. In seeking perfection, it can become impossible to make progress towards a goal because of over-thinking, rumination and excessive planning. Each task becomes so complicated in the mind that it is impossible to start. This procrastination leads to poor performance, and an increased feeling of stress and anxiety. Being a perfectionist can lead to perfection paralysis resulting in the inability to make decisions and take action to progress. Fear and self-criticism can prevent one from taking risks, completing tasks or achieving goals. This leads to a lack of accomplishment, and usually to feelings of frustration, guilt and shame. The pressure that perfectionism can impose on one can be unbearable and can become detrimental to physical and emotional health. Taking steps to recognize and reduce perfectionism can lead to a healthier approach to life and success.
