Parobasy Courses

Parobasy is a Ukrainian tradition that involves exchanging small gifts and treats at the end of the Easter season. In the same way that springtime in the West is associated with egg hunts and chocolate bunnies, so Easter time in Ukraine is focused on exchanging parobasy. The tradition usually takes place on the seventh Sunday after Easter, but it can also be observed on the feast of Pentecost. On the day of Parobasy, people exchange small gifts and treats and celebrate the end of the Easter season. These gifts include a variety of items—ranging from different kinds of sweets to toys and practical items like kitchen utensils and bathroom supplies. Typically, these gifts are wrapped in brightly colored paper or decorated basket and exchanged between friends, family, and neighbors. The concept of Parobasy is linked to the Easter egg as a symbol of fertility, growth, and rebirth. The tradition is thought to bring good luck to those who exchange the gifts and to help ensure a plentiful harvest in the year ahead. In some regions of Ukraine, Parobasy is celebrated using a traditional game. In the game, a wooden Easter egg is broken in half with the two halves being separately wrapped in differently decorated easter egg paper. These two halves are then hidden in different locations in the home and participants must find the two halves before being allowed to open the Parobasy. Parobasy is an important part of Ukrainian culture, and one that brings great joy to people of all ages. The exchange of gifts is a wonderful way of bringing family and friends closer together during Easter and is sure to give you lasting memories.
