Paresthesia Causes Courses
Paresthesia is a type of sensation that can feel like tingling, prickling, burning, or numbness of the skin without any physical cause. It occurs in both the peripheral nervous system (outside the central nervous system) and the central nervous system. This can be caused by a variety of conditions, including nerve damage, pressure on a nerve, or vitamin deficiencies. Common causes of paresthesia include nerve damage due to physical trauma, surgery, or radiation therapy, diabetes, pressure or compression on a nerve, multiple sclerosis, medication side effects such as those caused by chemotherapy, stroke or heart attack, alcohol or drug withdrawal, vitamin B-12 and folate deficiencies, hypothyroidism, Lyme disease, and prolonged sitting or pressure on the nerves. In cases of nerve damage, paresthesia is often accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, weakness, or decreased sensation in the affected parts of the body. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause, but may include medications, lifestyle changes, and physical or occupational therapy. In many cases, paresthesia is a temporary condition and will resolve itself, but in some cases it can become permanent if the underlying cause is not addressed.
