Parabola Curves Courses

Parabolic curves are symmetric curved lines, shaped like a U or an "eye" reflecting the parabola's common characteristic of being inverses of one another. In mathematics they are typically described as the graph of a quadratics equation, specifically y = ax2 + b, when a is greater than zero. Parabolas are used to represent a variety of natural phenomenons and are commonly used in physics, engineering, architecture, and economics. Parabolae have distinctive shapes that form when the parable equation is graphed. An opening parabolas has the highest point in the middle and extends to both the left and right, forming a U shape. A closing parabola has a single highest point and curves to the top and bottom, forming a curved eye shape. In physics, parabolas are often used to model the trajectory of an object that is taking a free fall, like a ball dropped from an elevated point. This happens because the acceleration due to gravity is constant and the velocity of the object is changing in a linear fashion, resulting in the parabolic path. Parabolas are so common in architecture that a term "parabolic arches" has been coined for them. In a parabolic arch, the weight needs to be concentrated in the center of the arch and the arch is curved. Examples of this type of arch include domes and inverted arches. Parabolas can also be used to model economic behaviors, like the demand and supply of a commodity. The demand curve is said to be shaped like a parabola and is formed when the quantity of a commodity supplied is plotted against its corresponding price. Parabolas are present in our world in various ways and are incredibly important to the fields of engineering, architecture, physics, and economics.
