Panthers Courses

The panther (Panthera pardus), also known as leopard or cheetah, is a large and powerful member of the Felidae family, one of the four “big cats” found all over the world. Panthers have certain distinct characteristics such as black and brownish-yellow fur, wide, round heads and powerful and muscular bodies. Depending on the species, the head to body length of a panther can range from 60 to 100 inches. Panthers are mainly carnivorous, hunting large and small prey including a range of hoofed animals, rodents, reptiles, birds and fish. Panthers are found in a variety of habitats, from open woodland or savannas to deciduous and mountainous forests. They are found throughout the African continent, and in parts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Panthers are solitary cats, but they may form temporary associations such as when finding a mate. They communicate through visual and aural signals such as scent marking, tail waving and vocalizations. The markings on the face of the panther are unique to each individual, helping to distinguish them from other members of the Felidae family. Despite its fierce hunting tactics in the wild, the panther is still at risk because of habitat destruction, hunting for its fur, and human encroachment. As a result, the panther is listed as a vulnerable species. Conservation efforts by organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund and Species Survival Commission are working to ensure the panther’s survival.
