Pakjesavond Courses
Pakjesavond (or Sinterklaasavond) is a traditional Dutch holiday celebrated each year on December 5. The holiday celebrates the arrival of Sinterklaas, a legendary figure originating from the folklore of Dutch and Belgian traditions who brings gifts to the children of the Netherlands. On the evening of December 5th, children look out their windows or wait on the streets to see the first signs of Sinterklaas. Adults help prepare the traditional "pakjes" (packages) of presents, candies and treats to be revealed. As Sinterklaas and his white horse, Amerigo, come into sight, a festive atmosphere is created with lights and decorations hung around the neighborhood and the sounds of Sinterklaas carols playing in the background. When Sinterklaas arrives at each house, he presents the packages to children who have been good during the year. The gifts are usually children's toys and books, but sometimes candy and small gifts can be given as well. After the children have opened their gifts, they are often asked to sing Sinterklaas carols. This is followed by a traditional Sinterklaas feast where all the children enjoy delicious food and treats. Pakjesavond is a cherished tradition for all Dutch children and adults, and it is an event that is often looked forward to all year long. It marks the start of a long holiday season and provides a magical evening for all who partake in the festivities.
