Pacifistas Courses

A pacifista (or "peaceful protester") is a person who protests non-violently against violence and war, instead of resorting to physical or violent responses. The term was first used in the early 1900s in the context of world peace, referring to those who wanted to achieve peace through peaceful means rather than by military force. Pacifists may also stand up for other causes, such as civil rights, environmental protection, human rights, animal rights and civil liberties. They often support negotiations and diplomacy between nations and oppose militarism, weaponry, and war. Many pacifists are strongly opposed to the use of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and would strive for a world free of these weapons of mass destruction. Pacifists may be part of a wider movement, such as civil disobedience or civil resistance. Some pacifists use the tactic of a nonviolent demonstration, such as a sit-in or hunger strike, to call attention to injustice while maintaining a commitment to non-violence. Pacifists often work hard to spread awareness of the costs of war and to promote initiatives that enable citizens to participate in peace initiatives. They may also join local or international organizations dedicated to nonviolent activism and social justice.
