Ozone Causes Cancer Courses
Ozone, a gas that is naturally occurring in the Earth’s atmosphere, can cause cancer if there are high levels of it in the air. Ozone is often created by air pollution, such as car exhaust, power plants, and chemical reactions in the air. These reactions usually involve chemicals such as nitrous oxide and formaldehyde, creating a harmful ozone layer in the atmosphere. This can result in cancer and other health effects in people who are exposed to ozone over a long period of time. Inhaling ozone gas can cause chronic respiratory system problems, such as chronic bronchitis and asthma. Ozone can also damage the walls of the lungs and cause chest pain. There is evidence that ozone exposure can increase the risk of certain cancers, including kidney, bladder, lung, and skin cancer. Ozone has also been found to increase the risk of tumors and other abnormalities in animals. Studies have also shown that being exposed to ground-level ozone for an extended period of time could have long-term effects on human health. In addition to increasing the risk of cancer, exposure to ozone can cause immune system damage, which may make individuals more susceptible to disease, and dry out skin and eyes. While ozone can be dangerous in high concentrations, it is also necessary for life on Earth. Ozone occurs naturally in the upper layers of the atmosphere and helps to protect the planet from harmful UV radiation from the sun. It is therefore important to reduce ozone pollution while maintaining enough of the natural ozone layer to keep Earth safe from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

- Where you live. A 2017 study published in the journal Cancer found that in the United States, counties with the poorest quality air, water, land, built environment and sociodemographic factors face increased incidence of cancer.
- Scented candles and air fresheners. Researchers measured levels of “volatile organic chemicals” in six houses in York, England, over the course of five days.
- Happy hour. In 2016, Danish researchers published a study linking increased alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. Researchers found that women who increased the amount of alcohol they drank over a five-year period faced a higher risk of breast cancer.
- Sawdust. Here’s one you may have never heard of before. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified wood dusts as human carcinogens, too.
- Food packaging. What causes cancer? Food, right? We often hear that our dietary choices impacts cancer risk, but the packaging may also play a role. Fast-food and fast food packaging like wrappers and boxes often contain perfluorinated chemicals.
- Certain sunscreens. While exposure to too much sunlight damage may cause cancer, overusing the wrong type of sunscreen also possess its own risks. Benzophenone-3 (or oxybenzone), a common ingredient in sunscreens, produces free radicals, which can trigger DNA damage and cancer growth.
- Lack of sunlight. According to researchers at Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego, approximately 250,000 cases of colorectal cancer and 350,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented worldwide by increasing levels of vitamin D3.
- Viruses and bacteria. While viruses and bacteria pose serious short-term risks, some also pose long-term health effects. Viruses like the Epstein-Barr virus and HIV are linked to cancer through a number of studies.
- Working the night shift. Nearly 15 percent of Americans work the night shift, and according to a number of large studies, this late-night work may increase cancer risk in some people.
- Burnt food. What causes cancer? Cancer’s link to fried food and inflammation may not be a surprise, but there’s more to the story. Acrylamide is a chemical created in starchy foods (like potatoes and toast) when they’re cooked at higher temperatures.
