Overpronation Causes Courses

Overpronation is a common biomechanical problem that affects many individuals and can cause a variety of physical discomforts and disorders. Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls inward excessively, beyond its normal boundaries, during the gait cycle - an issue known as “excessive pronation”. The typical cause of overpronation is an abnormally flexible or pronated ankle joint. When this occurs, a tendon called the tibialis posterior - which normally contracts to provide added stability to the arch and support for the foot - is unable to do so efficiently. As a result, the arch of the foot collapses to the ground and the foot is overpronated. There are several factors that can contribute to overpronation such as obesity, high arches, tight calf muscles, flat feet, weak foot muscles, and excessive wear on the inside of the shoe - all of which can affect the blood’s natural ability to support the foot. In addition, other conditions such as arthritis, shin splints, and heel pain can be caused by overpronation. The best way to avoid overpronation is to wear proper footwear with adequate support and cushioning and make sure your shoes fit properly and are not too loose in the heel area. Strengthening and stretching exercises for the legs, ankles, and feet may also help to reduce pronation and alleviate pain. If you are experiencing any discomfort from overpronation, it is important to consult a podiatrist or physical therapist to diagnose the condition and choose the best course of treatment.
