Oscillopsia Causes Courses

Oscillopsia refers to the perception of perceived “oscillations,” or back-and-forth motion, in one’s field of vision. It typically affects both eyes and can range from slight, barely perceivable motion to severe, uncomfortable motion. Oscillopsia usually results from a problem that affects the vestibular system, the part of the body responsible for the coordination and translation of motion. There are various causes of oscillopsia. The most common cause is vestibular neuritis, an inner ear infection marked by dizziness and vertigo that can cause vision to appear to “jump” or “bob” up and down. Another cause of oscillopsia is a head injury or skull trauma. Head injuries can disrupt the vestibular system, leading to oscillopsia. Other causes of oscillopsia include multiple sclerosis, migraine headaches, stroke, and brain aneurisms. In some cases, the cause of oscillopsia may be unknown. Finally, some cases may be related to side effects of certain medications or drug use. In these cases, symptoms may improve with the cessation of these medications. Since oscillopsia is often caused by disruption of the vestibular system, it should be evaluated by a trained doctor. Treatment options will vary depending on the underlying cause of the oscillopsia. In cases of vestibular neuritis, for example, a doctor may prescribe vestibular rehabilitative therapies, such as head and body exercises to help re-balance the vestibular system. Certain medications may also be prescribed to alleviate symptoms. In cases of serious head trauma, however, surgery may be necessary to repair any damaged parts of the vestibular system.
