Orton Gillingham Refresher Course
The Orton Gillingham Refresher Course is designed to provide an updated and comprehensive review of the fundamentals of Orton Gillingham, and to provide an opportunity for practitioners to practice and increase their skills in implementing the Orton Gillingham approach. This course is typically provided as a 1-day session for educational professionals who wish to engage in a vigorous review of the Orton Gillingham foundations and instructional strategies, who need to refresh and deepen their understanding of the Orton Gillingham approach, or who are new to the approach and need foundational instruction. The Refresher Course is intended to provide education professionals with an opportunity to practice and refine their understanding of the Orton Gillingham approach to instruction, as well as providing a comprehensive review of the foundations and instructional strategies of the system. Specifically, the Orton Gillingham Refresher Course introduces participants to the fundamentals of this multisensory approach, including: the language fundamentals, decoding, encoding and fluency; spelling, phonemic awareness and phonics; morphology, syntax and etymology; structured word inquiry and analogical reasoning; and approaches to assessment. Emphasis is placed on how to effectively apply the curriculum and instructional strategies to small and large groups, research-based strategies, technology applications and accommodations to make the Orton Gillingham approach accessible to all students. The Refresher Course is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the Orton Gillingham Approach and foster discussion about best practices when teaching students with Dyslexia. This program is primarily focused on developing instructional strategies and is appropriate for any individual who serves as an educational professional in a program where the Orton Gillingham approach to reading instruction is being provided.
