Orthodontist Classes Required Courses

An orthodontist is a dental specialist that has extra skills and training in the straightening of teeth and other facial deformities. An orthodontist is trained to diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial problems. To become an orthodontist, students must complete a series of classes and requirements. First and foremost, students must attend and graduate from a dental school. Dental schools provide students the necessary knowledge, skills, and clinical experience needed to practice dentistry. After graduating from dental school, students must complete an additional two to three years of specialty training in a dental specialty such as orthodontics. During these years, they will gain comprehensive knowledge and skills related to the diagnosis, planning, and treatment of teeth and facial deformities. Students must then pass a national board exam administered by the American Association of Orthodontics. Passing this exam indicates that the student has attained a knowledge and skill level to safely prepare them to practice orthodontics and dentistry independently. Finally, orthodontists must maintain their licensure in their respective state. To maintain licensure, orthodontists must frequently take additional courses to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field. In conclusion, orthodontists must attend and graduate from dental school, followed by two to three years of specialty training in orthodontics. Once orthodontists’ graduate from their specialty training, they must pass a national board exam and maintain their licensure by taking other courses to stay up-to-date with the latest developments.
