Orienteering is an exciting form of navigation that is becoming increasingly popular in California. With its varied landscape and picturesque views, the “Golden State” offers a great variety of orienteering courses ranging from easy to difficult. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn the basics, or an experienced orienteer looking for a challenge, California has something for you! The John Muir Trail in Sierra Nevada is a great place for those just getting started. This 1.5-mile, self-guided course is nestled in the woods and offers a combination of terrain and navigation that is designed to be fun and educational. Along the way, you’ll be sure to spot some of the diverse wildlife that makes this area home. For a slightly more challenging course, try the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. This intermediate-level course takes between 1.5 and 3 hours to complete and features varied terrain, from rolling hills to rocky trails. This is a great way to practice your navigation skills and challenge yourself in a beautiful setting. For a really difficult orienteering course, try Blossom Peak in the Angeles National Forest. This 10-mile course is not for the faint of heart! With a combination of rugged trails and steep inclines, you’ll need all of your navigational skills to stay on track.
