The John Muir Trail in Sierra Nevada is a great place for those just getting started. This 1.5-mile, self-guided course is nestled in the woods and offers a combination of terrain and navigation that is designed to be fun and educational. Along the way, you’ll be sure to spot some of the diverse wildlife that makes this area home. For a slightly more challenging course, try the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. This intermediate-level course takes between 1.5 and 3 hours to complete and features varied terrain, from rolling hills to rocky trails. This is a great way to practice your navigation skills and challenge yourself in a beautiful setting. For a really difficult orienteering course, try Blossom Peak in the Angeles National Forest.
