Organetas are traditional Greek instruments used in folk music and ceremonies. The organetas is a type of hurdy-gurdy, consisting of an acoustic box fitted with strings and keys. According to ancient Greek legend, the organetas was first created by Orpheus, a legendary musician capable of charming birds, beasts, and trees with his music. The organetas is usually made from wood and animal skin, though there are differences in construction depending on the region and the artist who builds them. The keys, usually made from ivory or bone, are attached to a wheel, which rubs against the strings when turned. The instrument has two melody strings and two drone strings, which are played with a bow. In modern times, the use of organetas in folk music has declined, however the instrument is still widely used in some parts of Greece. Many festivals throughout Greece feature organetas which are incorporated into traditional music and dance. For example, in the city of Thessaloniki, an annual Pentozali festival is celebrated with the accompaniment of an organetas.
