Order Of Courses In A Formal Dinner
When it comes to formal dinners, the order of the courses is very important. The order of the courses should generally be as follows: 1.Appetizers 2.Soups 3.Salads 4.Entrees 5.Side Dishes 6.Desserts 7.Coffee & Tea Appetizers are designed to be light and are perfect for boosting appetite. They often consist of a variety of bite-sized items such as fruit, cheese, nuts, meats and vegetables. Soups usually follow the appetizers and provide a warm and comforting start to the meal. Soups can range from light broths to thick and creamy. Salads are often served after the soup. They contain a mix of fresh vegetables and can be dressed with vinaigrette, oil and vinegar, or a creamy dressing. Entrees, which are the main course, generally follow the salads. This can include items such as steak, chicken, fish, or pasta. Side dishes are served alongside the entree and can range from vegetables to breads. Desserts are served after the entree and range from cakes, cookies, and pies. Coffee and tea are served at the end of the meal. This is a great way to end the meal on a sweet and caffeinated note.

- L'Aperitif: In America, appetizers are the start of the meal; in France, it's l'aperitif, which are small bites typically served with an alcoholic drink.
- L'Entree/Hors D’oeuvres: The entree of a French meal isn't the main course but rather the appetizer. The French word "Entrer," or to enter, explains its place in a formal meal.
- Fish: In a formal restaurant, a fish course garnished with vegetables comes between l'entree and the main course, though it might be considered the main course at home.
- Main Course: An elaborate meat or poultry dish, accompanied by a vegetable garnish, will be served next as the main course, or le plat principal. The vegetables will usually be served on the side, not on the same plate, and will likely be simple, seasonal vegetables.
- Salad: Traditionally, simple greens tossed with vinaigrette are served as a means of cleansing the palate and aiding digestion. Modern French cuisine has brought about some very elaborate salads and dressing flavors, but these are more likely to be found in an informal place or the home.
- Cheese: The French reputably eat more cheese than anyone else in the world. After the salad, and before (may also replace) the dessert they appreciate a selection of it served on a wooden board and only if you are a foreigner would you be offered bread.
- Dessert: Special occasions call for a treat. French desserts are indulgent, rich, and so beautifully decorated, but they're typically small. It might be a chocolate profiterole, mousse, or an apple tart.
