Optometrist Courses In Canada

The field of optometry is growing rapidly in Canada, which is why it has become important for professionals to be certified in the field to keep up with the growth. Optometrists are health care professionals who diagnose and treat the eyes. Optometrists provide comprehensive eye exams, prescribe medications, and perform minor eyewear repairs. Those considering a career in optometry may want to consider taking optometrist courses in Canada. In Canada, opting for a career in optometry requires a Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited post-secondary institution. The program typically takes four years and consists of core optometric science courses, ophthalmology and optometric clinical practice, and elective courses. Some optometric Doctor of Optometry programs in Canada include: • The University of Waterloo Optometry program • The University of Toronto’s School of Optometry • The University of Montreal’s Master of Science in Optometry • The University of British Columbia’s Optometry program • The University of Calgary’s Graduate Diploma in Optometry To qualify for admission into an optometry program, students must have completed specific prerequisite courses in mathematics, biology, and chemistry. Prospective optometrists should also be prepared to take practical skills classes such as binocular vision, contact lenses, and advanced vision therapy. Aspiring optometrists may also want to gain some clinical experience volunteering at optometry clinics, working with opticians, or shadowing an optometrist. Once an individual completes optometrist courses in Canada, they must also obtain licensure from their provincial college. Canadian optometrists must also register for membership with the Canadian Association of Optometrists. Continuing education for optometrists is compulsory in various provinces and encouraged in all provinces. By taking optometrist courses in Canada, individuals can pursue a career in the field. Not only will they gain the credentials they need to practice professionally, but they can also obtain the education and experience required to become a successful optometrist.
