Ophthalmia Causes Courses
Ophthalmia is an inflammation of the eye which can be caused by either bacterial, fungal, or viral infections. Infection of the eye can also occur through allergies, irritation, or damage to the tissue. Bacterial ophthalmia is most commonly caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. Bacterial ophthalmia is an infection of the eye which can be very painful and lead to permanent damage if not treated quickly. Risk factors for bacterial ophthalmia include contact lens use, traumatic injury, and participation in contact sports. Fungal ophthalmia is caused by a variety of fungi and parasites that invade the eye through exposure to soil or water. This form of ophthalmia usually presents as redness, itchiness, and discharge from the eyes. Those who suffer from diabetes, HIV/AIDS, or other chronic diseases are at an increased risk for fungal ophthalmia. Viral ophthalmia is caused by a virus such as herpes simplex or varicella zoster. This form of ophthalmia can cause significant complications such as corneal ulcerations, iris atrophy, and vision impairment if left untreated. Risk factors for viral ophthalmia include exposure to cold and/or dust, contact with an infected individual, and as more commonly associated, an outbreak of the virus in an area. Ophthalmia can be a very serious condition and should be treated immediately. Treatment of ophthalmia usually involves antibiotics or antiviral medications, as well as using medications to reduce inflammation and pain. Depending on the cause of the ophthalmia, further complications, such as vision loss, may be present. It is important to see an ophthalmologist for a complete evaluation and to determine the best course of treatment.
