Olympic Course
An Olympic course refers to the type of course used in Olympic competition. Olympic courses must meet the official standards of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in order to qualify for selection for use in the games. The courses must be suitable for the world’s best athletes, feature challenging terrain, and provide a safe, fair and competitive experience for all competitors. An Olympic course typically consists of a mixture of a track and field complex, as well as some off-track features such as a steeplechase course and long jump pits. The race track may be either a 400 or 800 meter track, with eight lanes, a jumping area and a throwing area, designed to accommodate the various events held in the sport. The track and field components of the course may also include hurdles and other obstacles to provide a greater challenge for competitors. For walking events, a venue may also feature a walking track or course which follows the traditional path of a standard track, but with extra obstacles or adjustments for visibility or adherence to the rules. The Olympic course also includes some off-track features, most notably, the fact that the host country may opt to build additional spectator stands, tents and other structures around the venue. Additional features may also be built, such as refreshment stands, food stalls, marquees for media and other non-related activities, and special spectator seating areas. Furthermore, to make sure that the Olympic course is up to the standard that the IOC requires, it must pass an independent safety inspection. The inspection examines the course layout, the safety features and obstacles, and the overall course design. This ensures that the course is in compliance with the IOC’s criteria, and that the Olympic course is a suitable environment for the world’s best athletes.
