Federal Prisons With Golf Courses
Federal prisons with golf courses are an interesting topic. Most people wouldn't expect golf courses to be available in prisons. However, the federal government has taken several steps towards allowing some inmates to have access to golf courses. The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) operates the Federal Prison System, which consists of 119 facilities spread throughout the United States. Of these, 11 have golf courses available to inmates. These golf courses are designed to provide inmates with an opportunity for physical activity and socialization. They allow inmates to interact with one another in a different environment, and provide a recreational outlet. The first prison to open a golf course was FCI Beaumont in Beaumont, Texas, which opened in 2005. Other prisons with golf courses include FCI Florence, Colorado; FCI Fairton, New Jersey; FCI Seagoville, Texas; FCI Otisville, New York; FCI Petersburg, Virginia; FCI Sheridan, Oregon; FCI Berlin, New Hampshire; FCI Estill, South Carolina; FCI Lompoc, California; and FCI Oxford, Wisconsin. All of these facilities offer nine-hole courses and some offer regulation courses. The courses are not considered luxurious amenities, but rather a therapeutic and recreation activity. The prisoner golfers still maintain the standard prison dress code, but they can also wear spikes, bring a golf bag, and are provided with rental golf sets. The most important aspect of the golf courses is that they are a privilege not all inmates can have access to. The golf courses can only be used by those with a completed disciplinary report and the majority of the participants are model prisoners. Ultimately, the Federal Prison System has taken an important step in providing some inmates with the opportunity to take part in physical activity and socialization opportunities. By launching these golf courses and actively involving inmates in the sport, the federal government is creating a culture of reform and rehabilitation.
