Courses Needed To Be An Optometrist
An optometrist is a healthcare professional who specializes in eye health, vision care and diagnosing vision problems. To become an optometrist, individuals must have completed a specialized education program. Depending on the primary area of focus, some optometrists may devote their time to preventing disease or detecting systemic conditions through an examination of the eyes. Required Courses The courses necessary for an optometry education will vary depending on the university or college an individual attends. At a minimum, coursework should include the following: • Anatomy and Physiology: This course covers anatomy and physiology of the eye, including structure, function and mechanisms of operation. • Pharmacology: An introduction to drugs, medications, and pharmacological treatments. • Visual Optics: Focuses on understanding optical characteristics of the eye and the principles of light to correct vision. • Clinical Optics: Encompasses the usage of appropriate lenses and frames to correct vision. • Clinical Skills: Teaches the ability to diagnose and treat various eye diseases through various diagnostic tools. • Diagnostic Testing: Covers interpretation of tests to detect common eye conditions. • Ocular Pathology: Examines the diseases and disorders of the eye and their causes. • Differential Diagnosis: An introduction to the application of external laboratory tests and its relationship with complementary medical services. • Ocular Development: Topics covered include growth and development of the eye in both normal and abnormal conditions. • Ocular Disease Management: Focuses on the diagnosis and management of diseases of the eye. • Refraction: Instructs the student on how to assess visual acuity, pupil reactions, and choose corrective lenses. • Contact Lens Fitting: Teaches the student how to fit various types of lenses and make corrections to vision. • Professional Practice: Includes ethical and legal issues related to optometric practice. • Practical Clinics: Encompasses topics such as vision screening, contact lenses, pediatric optometry, and ophthalmic disease. • Research Methods: An introduction to the principles and practice of research design, data collection and analysis. In addition to coursework in the classroom and lab, students must also complete supervised clinical training. This hands-on experience allows the student to get acquainted with common tools and methods of optometry, so they are better prepared to practice when they graduate. The experience and expertise needed to become an optometrist make this profession exceptionally rewarding, and the courses outlined above provide an excellent foundation of knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field.
