About the course
This course is designed to inspire young people in Tanzania to start keeping bees. It is in Swahili which means it is accessible to everyone. It has theory and practical elements and uses case studies from the SET sponsored beekeeping groups.
There are two formats of the course. One for students which is a purely online course with video, audio, text, discussion boards and quizzes. Secondly there are these lesson plans and a blended element for teachers to use with their students.
All the material is provided free of charge under Creative Commons licence. Students have the option of downloading the material if they wish. Teachers can download the material or ask SET to send them an online link to all the material plus lesson plans.
Module 1 – Introduction to Beekeeping
Beekeeping basics
This lesson is about the history and background of beekeeping including how important beekeeping is for the whole eco-system. It includes Tanzanian information specifically the types of hives found here and covers basic knowledge about the types of bees in a colony and their roles.
Module 2 - Getting Started
Beekeeping Equipment
For this lesson you need to bring into the class actual beekeeping equipment. Students will put it on and try it and touch and feel the equipment. This can also be done in the field if available.
