Triginometry for Pre Calculus

Triginometry for Pre Calculus

Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that studies relationships between side lengths and angles of triangles. The field emerged in the Hellenistic world during the 3rd century BC from applications of geometry to astronomical studies.

Trigonometric functions are used in obtaining unknown angles and distances from known or measured angles in geometric figures. Trigonometry developed from a need to compute angles and distances in such fields as astronomy, mapmaking, surveying, and artillery range finding.

The three basic functions in trigonometry are sine, cosine, and tangent. Based on these three functions the other three functions that are cotangent, secant and cosecant are derived. All the trigonometrical concepts are based on these functions.

Although both Algebra II and Trigonometry involve solving mathematical problems, Algebra II focuses on solving equations and inequalities while Trigonometry is the study of triangles and how sides are connected to angles.

The first known table of chords was produced by the Greek mathematician Hipparchus in about 140 BC. Although these tables have not survived, it is claimed that twelve books of tables of chords were written by Hipparchus. This makes Hipparchus the founder of trigonometry.

Trigonometric functions were among the earliest uses for mathematical tables. Such tables were incorporated into mathematics textbooks and students were taught to look up values and how to interpolate between the values listed to get higher accuracy. Slide rules had special scales for trigonometric functions.

Scientific calculators have buttons for calculating the main trigonometric functions (sin, cos, tan, and sometimes cis and their inverses). Most allow a choice of angle measurement methods: degrees, radians, and sometimes gradians. Most computer programming languages provide function libraries that include trigonometric functions. The floating-point unit hardware incorporated into the microprocessor chips used in most personal computers has built-in instructions for calculating trigonometric functions
