Glass Beads-Vertebrae Ribs
Glass Beads-Vertebrae Ribs
This class will be presented to show the student how to apply Vertebrae Rib techniques to glass beads to make beautiful designs. The class is intended for the beginning student and does not require a lot of experience or expensive tools and materials. The class will start with an introduction and a presentation slide of the class Syllabus. We will then review the prerequisites including having knowledge of basic lampwork safety requirements, a well ventilated, work area and a pair of didymium safety glasses. It is also recommended that the student has a kiln to properly anneal their finished beads.
The first lecture will discuss simple vertebrae rib theory. We will use clear glass on a colored base bead to build "walls". The instructor will then demonstrate how to melt the glass so that the colored part of the base bead seeps up through the clear to form the ribs. The bead will then be shaped with a lentil press to further accentuate the design.
The remaining lectures will focus on applying the same vertebrae rib technique to different types of glass. Demonstrations will be completed using Frit, Stripes, Enamels and Dots. Each bead will be shaped using a different techniques and tools. An oval shaped bead will be demonstrated using an oval bead roller and mashers. A rectangular bead shape will be achieved using a Crunch press and the final bead will go back to the large lentil press.
A short wrap up and review will conclude the class.
