Learn Simulation of Traffic & Pedestrian on VISSIM & VISWALK

Growing cities are being followed by increasing traffic on the road which is enhancing the problems of traffic congestion. To better manage the existing road facility, it is important to design the road geometry such as number of lanes as well as control conditions such as traffic signal timings according to incoming traffic. If this problem is solved manually, it will require a lot of trials and errors consuming a lot of time. Also, it will be impossible to arrive at optimal solution because the traffic conditions keep on changing. To solve this problem, we use the method of traffic simulation using software such as VISSIM.

Similarly, designing crowded facilities such as railway station, airport terminals or religious centers require analysis of how people will be moving in and out specially in case of an emergency evacuation. If the corridors are not wide enough or if the exits are not given frequently, chances of rampage exists which might lead to serious accidents. To solve this problem, we do pedestrian simulation using VISWALK to see whether our planned facilities are adequate for present conditions as well as future ones.

Simulation is a method of predicting real world conditions using a model often on computers. We can use software such as VISSIM to simulate traffic flow conditions as well as VISWALK to simulate pedestrian flow to check if the existing infrastructure is adequate. This study comes in handy for engineers and planners who are tasked to guide policy makers on investments in road or pedestrian infrastructure.
