The present reference compiles and systematizes the contents of a basic education in sports fencing, presents in detail methodologies and exercises for application in technical and tactical areas.

The guidelines presented are scientifically based and extensively tested in educational systems of children-juniors sports schools of Russia. The sections of the reference containing composition of technical actions, variants of combat actions and the sequence of their mastering in fencing disciplines, special information in coaching and training system, as well as terminology have all been previously published.

The present reference is aimed at attendees of seminars for coaching qualification advancement in sports fencing disciplines. It contains a complex of technical and combat actions, as well as exercises for mastering such. Also shown are tactical skills, aimed primarily, at selection of specific actions in combat conditions, methodologies for mastering footwork techniques and exercises for developing specialized motor skills. Additional independent sections are ‘Management of Combat Practice’ and ‘Fencing Terminology’.

General characteristics of competition activity in fencing. The applied system of conducting a bout in modern fencing contains general indicators, interrelating foil, epee and sabre bouts, due to unified principles of motor activity formation in blade actions and footwork. In addition, the rules of fencing combat place many similar demands on psycho-physiological and motor skills of the participants. As a result, the differentiation of specialized activity characteristics, determining the criteria of technique and tactics evaluation, permit the advancement of coaching and training methodology in all fencing disciplines.

3. Variety in manifestation of psycho-physiological and motor possibilities of bout participants, supporting the application of combat actions.
