An Introduction to Birds Using Pokémon!

An Introduction to Birds Using Pokémon!

In this course, we'll learn about the taxonomy and characteristics of birds, then delve into the classification of birds. We will compare specific species (their appearance and behaviors) to their Pokemon counterparts. Students will also be invited to design and show off their own Pokemon, based on an interesting species of bird that has not yet inspired a "real" Pokemon. This is a great class for Pokemon fans, budding ornithologists, or just those students curious about how science influences pop culture.

Part 1: Introduction, Birds that should be Pokemon (but aren't yet), Birds of Prey, Game birds

Part 2: Song birds, Parrots, Quetzals, Woodpeckers, Toucans, Ostriches

By the end of the class, students should be able to: List the characteristics that all birds share. Distinguish between different birds of prey. Name some types of game birds and their Pokemon equivalents. Describe some of the unique characteristics of the lowly pigeon. Explain why songbirds are called songbirds. Describe some of the unique characteristics of parrots, quetzals, and ostriches. Point out the characteristics that woodpeckers and toucans share (that tell us they are related).
