Ayurveda - Holistic Wisdom for Health
The word "Ayurveda" is a combination of 2 Sanskrit root words - "Ayu" which means "Life" and "Veda° which means "knowledge or learning". Ayurveda therefore covers the entire Knowledge and Life. Ayurvedic's philosophy of well being embodies the promotion of health through diet, lifestyle and harmonious living.
In this series of 5 lessons which is presented in English with Mandarin translations, Ms Vasanthi Pillay, President of the Ayurveda Association of SIngapore, takes you on a journey of learning where you will discover the holistic wisdoms for health that have been practiced for thousands of years.
These 5 lessons covers
Relationship between Yoga and Vata. Pitt. Kapha. 1 hour 21 minutes
This session introduces you to the underlying philosophy of Yoga practice and the different body types according to Ayurveda, which is especially useful for Yoga practitioners and Yoga instructors who wish to go beyond the Yoga poses or asanas. Learn also about the relationship between ayurveda and yoga and how you can apply them for diet and lifestyle purposes.
2. Six Stages Of Disease (Shat Kriya Kale), 1 hour 19 minutes
According to ayurveda, when agni (or 'Fire) is impaired it leads to improperly digested food (ama) that circulates throughout the body thereby causing disease in stages (shad kriya kale). In the first 4 stages, the disease has not manifested and can be reversed using diet and lifestyle. Only when it manifests in the body (Vyakti) will it require clinical intervention.
3. Body Channels (Srota) And Nadis (Subtle Channels).1 hour 11 minutes
The entire body has innumerable channels (srota) that are the spaces which carry and transform materials. There are 13 types of srotas which transports inputs and outputs (eg food, perception, breath, excretion etc). There is 1 subtle srota for the mind and 2 additional srotas for women.
4. Ayurvedic nutrition and the 6 tastes, 1 hour 22 minutes
This session looks at the nutrition for different body types from a ayurveda perspective. Learn how each taste is correlated to the Panchamahabuta and Vata. Pitta and Kapha and why a customized nutrition plan is needed for everyone based on their body type.
5. Seasonal routines (ritucharya) - diet and lifestyle changes with the seasons , 1 hour 13 minutes
We need to make changes to our daily routines based on the different seasons. Ayurveda discusses 6 seasons and emphasizes the importance of observing the qualities (lakshana) of the seasons and merely by the calendar dates.
Achieve a basic understanding of ayurveda and how it relates to yoga practice, diet, lifestyle and wellness.
