Fall Prevention Education
Through the completion of my doctoral capstone project I have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of fall prevention in the elderly population. I was able to integrate fall prevention education into patients’ plan of care at MercyOne West Des Moines over a 14 week period. In this course you will learn the importance of fall prevention education as well as the prevalence of falls in the United States. You will also gain a deeper understanding of the various intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for falls in the elderly population and how to integrate fall prevention education into daily practice as an occupational therapist or certified occupational therapy assistant. The objectives for this course are to be able to identify various risk factors for falls in the elderly population, understand the prevalence of falls and the importance of fall prevention education, and lastly that you will be able to identify ways in which an OT can integrate fall prevention education into a patient’s plan of care.
