Strength of Materials- Part I
Strength of Materials- Part I
This course is the first part of the lecture series of Strength of Materials subject. It takes you through various topics like Stresses & Strains, Shear Force Diagram(SFD) & Bending Moment Diagram(BMD). Various numerical are solved to explain various concepts and their applications. Basic Mathematics and Solid Mechanics are the requirement for understanding of this subject.
We start with introduction to history of Unit Systems wherein we study about Foot-Pound-Second(F.P.S), Meter-Kilogram-Second(M.K.S) and Centimeter-Gram-Second(C.G.S) systems. Their interconversions is also explained along with the importance of unit system in engineering.
Further, we move to the concept of Stresses and Strains where topics like types of stresses and strains, derivation for change in length, stress-strain for ductile and brittle materials, elongation of tapered bar, elongation of bar due to self-weight, stress and strain in composite and compound bars, temperature stresses and strains, concept of strain, Poisson's Ratio, uniaxial-biaxial-triaxial loading, elastic constants- and numericals on all these topics.
Lastly we study about Shear Force Diagram(SFD) and Bending Moment Diagram(BMD). Topics like types of supports, beams, reactions, Shear Force and Bending Moment sign conventions and numericals are discussed in it.
Test is given at the end of course for practice so that expertise can be gained in dealing with day-to-day problems.
