Deaf Awareness Training for the Health Sector

This short bespoke online course is for anyone within the healthcare sector ranging from GP’s, Reception, Clinics, A&E and Ward staff. It will help you to understand how communicate with d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) patients effectively.

You will also learn about simple but practical adaptions you can easily do within in your workplace or environment to improve and ensure service provision is suitable and accessible for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients. As part of the training module’s you will also access video’s portraying our local deaf patients' own real life experiences within the NHS, providing you with an insight into the challenges they face and create a greater understanding of how best to assist those patients in the future.

The online short course is entirely self-directed so you can study at your own convenience, with the option of selecting modules relating directly to your area of employment eg reception, GP surgery, ward staff etc.

Course content and structure

The course takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete.

It covers the following topics:

  • What deaf awareness is and why it is important in a health care setting, enabling you to improve your service to dDeaf and Hard of Hearing patients.

  • Legislation: what you need to know and your obligations to make reasonable adjustments according to the Accessible information Standard 2016.

  • Understanding and identifying different levels/ types of d/Deafness and how to support patients according to their own communication needs.

  • Explaining different communication strategies for communicating well with d/Deaf and HoH patients

  • Understanding how to improve your service and make necessary adaptions appropriate for D/deaf and HoH patients, creating a positive patient experience.

Each topic is presented by Rachel Shenton (our Patron) who is a committed advocate in raising deaf awareness for the deaf community, she won an Oscar for her short live action film “The Silent Child” in March 2018.

Throughout the training modules there are videos’ showing patients and clinicians in a hospital setting explaining best practice. The course features multiple choice questions at the end to encourage reflective thinking and to test your understanding of the course content.
