In this class, Charming Pansy Brushes for Creating Sweet Illustrator Patterns, you will be guided step-by-step through the process of producing a sweet repeating pansy pattern design. We will travel from initial brush creation and composition of the design, to creation of the final pattern tile. In this class, you will learn how to thoroughly use the potential of Adobe Illustrator custom brushes. My methods will wield many petals from the initial one you create. These petals can be employed in creating contrasting and co-ordinating flowers, and it will look like you created so many! These brushes are can then be added to your assets libraries: they can be added to other brush sets in the future, and you can use them to make heaps of designs down the line! Using these charming brushes in organized layers, you can see the pattern design truly emerge magically!

This Charming Pansy Brush class is made-to-measure for designers with some knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and who want to learn additional techniques, though basic brush construction is reinforced. Overview:

Lesson 1

In Lesson 1 we will talk about inspiration and reference and how to set up your workspace in Adobe Illustrator. We will also set up color swatches using a reference photo.

Lesson 2

This unit focuses on drawing initial shapes for the pansy brushes we will be creating, an overview on how to create them, and how to adjust variables and stay organized. Brushes will be developed in this lesson to help review brush construction.

Lesson 3

You will now get the opportunity to divide the petal using unique methods with the eraser tool, the knife tool, the anchor point tool, reflect, average and the new the join tool. We will also work with the layers palette to stay organized.

Lesson 4

The outcome of this unit is dividing our petal using new methods with the knife tool and the eraser tool, as well as a bunch of organizational details in the layers palette.

Lesson 5

We explore alternate methods for creating details with custom brushes that use calligraphy brushes as well as art brushes, as well as using the convert anchor point tool.

Lesson 6

We will go into greater detail here on construction of the different color areas. We use offset path, the blob brush, pathfinder, layers and transparency palettes. I will also explain how to crop your reference photos if necessary.

Lesson 7

In this lesson, we will start constructing the compound brush shapes that will become our first petal using unique blending methods with brushes.

Lesson 8

We work more on our petals here using effects like roughen and techniques like “select same”, and you will learn a few other techniques.

Lesson 9

This unit focuses on creating all the petals we need and we begin to explore the layout of the pattern swatch itself.

Lesson 10

Testing and finalizing our pattern swatch is the focus of this unit, and it is so much fun and so very satisfying! We touch on the recolor tool and a few others not explored earlier.
