Description of This Course:
It is crucial for people who want to learn Karate and Self-Defense to understand that there is a vast difference between the system of Karate and Self-Defense and someone who is displaying aggression against someone.
From time to time, I am listening to people’s story about self-defense like this one that one night someone entered into his home; and he grabbed his sword and chased the bad guy out of his home. This case does not qualify for self-defense because he grabbed his sword and chased the bad guy out of his house. Karate means empty hand, a person who knows Karate, s/he has become a weapon. Most importantly, a person remains empty and does not allow internal or external factors to control her/his direction of life. Just approach the intruder about the nature of her/his business. Guide that person in the right direction of personal growth. Coming back to the event that he chased the bad guy with his sword. What is the function of a sword? The purpose of a sword is to cause harm and death. If he used his sword against the intruder, he would face criminal charges. There are two reasons for it. One, he took the law in his hand. Last, he contributed to social chaos in society. Assuming police would not lay criminal charges against this person for causing harm or death to someone. It is a question of morality. How would you live with yourself knowing that you inflicted injury or death to someone?
I am also hearing people are talking about carrying a knife as a means of self-protection. The question is, why do you take a knife for self-protection? Assuming you are involved in a fistfight and you used the knife, simply brandishing the knife to another person. A police officer comes to the scene of the crime and will ask you, why did you have a knife? You will say it was for my self-protection. Now, that police officer will look at you as a trouble maker. You cannot say that this knife accidentally went to my pant’s pocket. Most likely, you will face some form of a criminal charge. Now, you will appear in a criminal court of law, and you are standing before an honorable judge who wants to know why did you have a knife? You cannot change your story because you told police why you used a knife. You will say to the judge what you said to the police officer that you used a knife for self-protection. The judge would deem as a danger to society, which will find you guilty of a crime. Now, you have a criminal record for the rest of your life, cannot get a job, cannot do anything in life.
Last, people talk to me about self-defense in this concept. I saw a man who was harassing a woman. I stepped in and told the man to get lost. Are you a police officer? No. We have police officers who are trained and have legal jurisdiction to perform social order in society.
There was one video clip on YouTube about self-defense. There is a man who is well-trained in a martial way. This well-trained man was sitting at a table who was eating food with his friends. A man approached him who made some inappropriate comment to him. The well-trained man got off his chair and dropped the man on the ground. He wrestled with him for a brief period and let him go. This was not self-defense because there was an option for him to walk away from the establishment without incident.
Now, What I Would Do:
If someone breaks into my home, I would put myself in their shoes and would understand them that they are going through rough times. I would offer them $20.00 CDN, some food and may help them to put their life together. Therefore, this is self-defense. I protected myself and them from being safe.
I would not carry any form of weapon with me because if I drop that I would not carry any form of weapon with me because if I drop that weapon on the ground, someone can pick it and use it against me. My body is my weapon. Furthermore, I would not go to any establishment that I fear insecure about it. I avoid danger.
If I see a man is abusive toward a woman or children, I will call the police because I do not have police training. This society has rules; I abide by those rules.
I would lose my self-defense skills at this time only. A person breaks into my house, and I will ask the person to leave my house. Assuming the intruder does not want to leave my house. I will call 911, so police officers are on their way. Presuming the intruder begins to step forward toward me. I will move backward and will ask the person to stop. If the intruder does not comply with my instruction, I will use as much force necessary to prevent the person from causing harm to themselves and me.
Therefore, I explored all avenues to prevent physical confrontation. I used force for self-preservation of life, for the intruder and me. Important Points:
The criminal law deems specific body language as a criminal act such as the stiff neck, grounding teeth, making a fist, or holding an object.
In conclusion, if you want to know what your legal rights are for self-defense, you may wish to speak with a criminal lawyer to have a clear understanding of how criminal law defines self-defense in your region because every legal jurisdiction defines self-defense differently than other areas.
